Collection: Rose Gum Timber

Rose Gum (Eucalyptus grandis), a fast-growing and highly productive hardwood, is a tall forest tree reaching heights of 45 to 55 meters. Native to the eastern coast of Australia, Rose Gum is cultivated in plantations across Queensland and New South Wales, where it thrives in a variety of soil types. Known for its appealing pink to red-brown heartwood, this versatile timber is used in both construction and decorative applications.

Appearance of Rose Gum Timber

Rose Gum has a warm, pinkish heartwood that ranges from pale pink to red-brown, with paler sapwood that may not always be distinct. The wood has a moderately coarse and even texture, with a straight to slightly interlocked grain. Insect trails and pinholes are common, adding unique character to this timber. Its blend of soft pinks and peach tones makes it an attractive choice for decorative purposes.

Common Applications of Rose Gum Timber

Rose Gum’s versatility allows it to be used in a range of structural and aesthetic applications. It is popular in general construction for house framing, cladding, flooring, and mouldings, as well as internal linings, joinery, fascia, and barge-boards. Its aesthetic appeal makes it well-suited for fine furniture, durable outdoor furniture, and decorative joinery. Additionally, Rose Gum is used in boat building for framing, planking, and decking, and is suitable for dowel rods, broom handles, and fruit cases.

Workability of Rose Gum Timber

Moderately easy to work, Rose Gum is suitable for hand tools and machines well, delivering a smooth finish with sanding. It dries well with conventional air and kiln seasoning, though care should be taken to prevent collapse and surface checking in the early stages. The sapwood readily accepts preservative treatments, though the heartwood is resistant to standard commercial treatments. Rose Gum can be bonded with standard glues and responds well to paint, stain, polish, and oil finishes.

Durability of Rose Gum Timber

Rated Class 2 for above-ground durability (15 to 40 years) and Class 3 for in-ground use (5 to 15 years), Rose Gum provides long-lasting performance in a variety of settings. Although not naturally termite-resistant, its sapwood is not prone to lyctid borer attack, making it suitable for a wide range of indoor and outdoor applications.

Origin and Availability of Rose Gum Timber

Kosny Timber sources Rose Gum from native forests and plantations along Australia’s east coast, particularly in Queensland and New South Wales, where it is widely available as sawn timber. This availability ensures a steady supply for construction and decorative projects alike.
