Appearance of Grey Box Timber
Grey Box heartwood is a pale, yellowish-brown color, with lighter sapwood. It has a fine, even texture with a characteristic interlocked grain, rarely featuring gum veins. Its appearance is similar to that of Coast Grey Box, making it an attractive option for both practical and decorative applications.
Common Applications of Grey Box Timber
Due to its density and durability, Grey Box is commonly used in heavy construction, flooring, and round timber applications. It’s also highly valued for cladding, bridge and wharf construction, shipbuilding, piles, poles, and sleepers. Additionally, Grey Box is an excellent fuelwood, known for its high energy content.
Workability of Grey Box Timber
Though Grey Box’s density provides outstanding durability, it can be challenging to work with. The timber can be painted, stained, and polished to a fine finish, but machining and surface preparation should occur immediately prior to gluing to ensure optimal adhesion. While it dries slowly, Grey Box is resistant to surface checking, making it stable for long-term projects.
Origin and Availability of Grey Box Timber
Kosny Timber sources Grey Box from sustainably managed native forests in New South Wales and Queensland, with limited availability in Victoria and South Australia. The timber is primarily available in the regions where it grows, with strong demand for its use in flooring and construction.
