Collection: Blackdown Stringybark

Blackdown stringybark is a durable native hardwood species primarily found in the Blackdown Tableland region of central Queensland, about 150 kilometres southwest of Rockhampton. It grows to impressive heights of up to 45 metres, with a stem diameter of up to two metres. Although not a "true" stringybark, it is named for its fibrous grey-brown bark. Known for its strength and durability, this timber is valued for various engineering and construction applications.

Appearance of Blackdown Stringybark Timber

The heartwood of Blackdown stringybark varies from brown to yellow-brown, offering a warm and earthy aesthetic. Its sapwood is a distinct pale brown. The timber has a medium and even texture, with slightly interlocked grain. Fine rays are visible with a lens, adding subtle detail to its appearance.

Applications of Blackdown Stringybark Timber

Blackdown stringybark is widely used in both engineering and general construction. In engineering, it is often employed for mining timbers and utility pole cross-arms due to its durability and strength. For general construction, it is used in unseasoned framing, flooring, cladding, and other building applications.

Workability of Blackdown Stringybark Timber

This timber is best worked by machine due to its hardness, which is rated as 1 on a 6-class scale for indentation and hand tooling. It seasons well and is amenable to all standard fastenings and fittings. It readily accepts paint, stains, glues, and polish, ensuring a high-quality finish for a variety of uses.

Durability of Blackdown Stringybark Timber

Blackdown stringybark is highly durable, with a life expectancy of up to 40 years above ground and 15 to 25 years in-ground. It is termite-resistant (in accordance with AS 3660.1), and its untreated sapwood is immune to lyctid borer attack. The sapwood can also be easily treated with preservatives using commercial processes.

Origin and Availability of Blackdown Stringybark Timber

This species is native to Queensland and is primarily available within the Blackdown Tableland region where it grows naturally. Commercial availability is limited, largely confined to this geographic area.

Source of Blackdown Stringybark Timber

Blackdown stringybark is harvested from native forests and remains a sought-after material for its durability and versatility in engineering and construction applications. Its strength and resilience make it a reliable choice for demanding projects.
