Appearance of Brush Box Timber
The heartwood of Brush Box ranges from a greyish pink to a rich reddish brown, contrasting with its paler sapwood. With a fine, even texture and an interlocked grain, Brush Box is ideal for appearance-based applications like flooring, though the interlocked grain can cause distortion during drying. Free from gum veins, Brush Box’s unique grain pattern brings warmth and elegance to any interior space.
Common Applications of Brush Box Timber
Brush Box is widely used for flooring, cladding, paneling, and select structural applications. Its durability and resistance to wear also make it suitable for heavy-use items such as mallets, mauls, handles, shuttles, and boat building. It is occasionally used in more robust applications, including bridge decking, wharf construction, weatherboarding, and wedges, showcasing its versatility and strength.
Workability of Brush Box Timber
While Brush Box is durable and attractive, its workability can be challenging. The wood’s density, interlocked grain, and silica content may cause tool edges to wear quickly and make nailing or screwing susceptible to splitting. Its natural waxiness (due to arjunolic acid) can complicate adhesive use but provides an excellent base for paints and stains. Although unsuitable for steam bending, Brush Box resists splintering and wear effectively, making it ideal for high-traffic areas and demanding applications.
Origin and Availability of Brush Box Timber
Sourced from native forests along Australia’s eastern coast, Brush Box is primarily available in New South Wales and Queensland. While it may be limited outside these regions, Kosny Timber provides access to this distinct hardwood for clients seeking its durability and aesthetic appeal.
